What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.
Why a specialist in orthodontics?
Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, go on to additional full-time university education in an accredited orthodontic residency program supervised by orthodontists. That training lasts at least two or three academic years. By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely educated experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws and create beautiful smiles!
Why do dental and facial problems occur?
Most of the malocclusions are hereditary, others are acquired. Hereditary problems include crooked teeth due to lack of space, flared teeth, cross bite, gaps between teeth, extra teeth or lack o f teeth, among other variety of bad relationships between teeth and jaws. Acquired problems can be caused by thumb sucking, inadequate tongue pressure against teeth, early loss of baby teeth or adult teeth due to cavities or trauma. All of these problems not only affect teeth but also have an important impact in facial aesthetics.
Can you be too old for braces?
There is no age limit for braces. As long as you have good periodontal health, braces can be used to straighten your teeth and correct your bite. More people over age 30 are getting braces today than ever before. In our practice we have patients from 3 to 65 years old!
My kids just got braces and now I'm thinking of getting them, too.
Many adults "finally get their teeth done" when their kids go in for orthodontic treatment. It's more common than you think! Some of our patients have their entire family in braces!
Can I get those invisible braces Invisalign or lingual orthodontics instead of traditional ones?
Usually yes, but that depends on your specific case. Invisalign braces are usually not recommended for very complicated cases, or cases that involve extractions. Only a qualified dental professional who has examined your mouth can decide whether Invisalign is right for you. If you are very concerned about your appearance with braces, another thing to consider is lingual braces, which are behind the teeth, like Incognito. Your orthodontist must take special training to do lingual braces -- not every orthodontist does them. Dr. Manzanera has taken the necessary special training to do Invisalign and Lingual braces.
